RuPaul's Drag Race Season 17 Episode 8

RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 17 Episode 8 Recap

Buckle your ruby slippers, friends of Dorothy! This week, the queens packed their bags for a twisted journey down the yellow brick runway. With roles inspired by The Wizard of OzWicked, and The Wiz, and choreography by Jamal Sims, the Rusical challenge pushed the top ten to sing, dance, and slay their way through a magical musical spectacular.

Racer Chaser’s spellbook is open—let’s dive into the drama, the vocals, and the parasols.

The queens were assigned roles in The Wicked Wiz of Oz, a musical mashup of all things Oz-adjacent:

  • Sam Star embodied a Cher-inspired Wicked Witch and had the judges cackling. Lots of queens do Cher impressions. This was one of the few good ones.
  • Jewels Sparkles floated in as a bubbly, high-camp Good Witch. Strangely, Jewels has not looked less like Arianna this whole competition than in this look. Her timing could’ve been better.
  • Suzie Toot got green for the role of a modern, vocal-forward Green Witch
  • Lexi Love roared as the Lioness with glam and grit.
  • Onya Nurve gave Harlem Dorothy energy with confidence and style.
  • Acacia Forgot played Kansas Dorothy but struggled to find her sparkle.
  • Lana Ja’RaeArriettyKori King, and Lydia B Kollins filled out the ensemble as the Tin Woman, Scarecrow, and Flying Monkeys.

Sam Star’s powerhouse performance stood out, while Suzie Toot’s unexpected vocal range gave her major momentum. Jewels Sparkles also shined bright, fully embracing the joy and glamour of her role. Onya Nurve is always finding the spotlight.

On the other end, Acacia Forgot and Kori King couldn’t quite click into character.

This week’s runway was all about shade:

  • Suzie Toot wowed in a monochrome art deco fantasy, wielding a delicate parasol with precision.
  • Jewels Sparkles served witchy elegance in a sparkly black gown with a detailed black parasol.
  • Lexi Love walked out with a gold cane accessory for her gold and black with a parasol/hat/wig moment.
  • Sam Star gave Southern belle with a twist, looking ready for a mint julep and a read.
  • Arrietty celebrated her Latin roots in a bold, ruffled red ensemble.
  • Kori King leaned into Oz nostalgia with a blue gingham number and a stuffed dog tucked under her arm. It was cute but a little too on the nose. According to Kori, having the look ready was a coincidence.
  • Acacia Forgot showed up in a towering hair piece that alternated hair and parasols. It was fun, quirky idea. The look was can-can even though the skirt length was can’t-can’t.

After the critiques, Kori King and Acacia Forgot found themselves in the bottom two. The song? A sultry, dramatic pop anthem that demanded performance and presence.

  • Kori brought intensity, movement, and a few unexpected tricks.
  • Acacia gave emotion but lacked the connection needed to stand out.

In the end, Kori King stayed and Acacia Forgot was asked to sashay away because the producers wanted more of the King Kollins Kai Kai.

This week brought some real vulnerability. Arrietty and Kori King opened up about their struggles with body image and disordered eating, while Acacia Forgot shared her experience living with cystic fibrosis. There were tears, hugs, and a reminder that drag is about survival as much as it is sparkle.

And yes, the Werk Room got a little more romantic: it’s kai-kai time. Kori and Lydia B Kollins made it official with flirty glances and confirmed crushes. Love is in the air (and apparently, so is glitter).

  • “The Wicked Wiz of Oz” – A triple homage to The Wizard of OzWicked, and The Wiz, with roles inspired by each but delivered with pure Drag Race energy.
  • Sam Star’s “Cher Witch” – Camp meets icon. If you don’t clap along to the “Dark Lady” chorus, you’re not living. Do you need your card taken away?
  • Runway Parasol Theme – “Shady Ladies” was a literal invitation to throw shade with style.

Who gave the best Oz performance? Was Suzie Toot’s Green Witch your surprise fave? And who truly brought the most shade to the runway?
